World Cup 2026: Germany Will Flex Their Might Against Minnows Curacao

Germany vs Curacao

Germany are out to redeem themselves in World Cup 2026 after disappointing runs in 2018 and 2022, and they can start their campaign on a positive note with a winnable match against minnows Curacao on Sunday night at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. This match is the curtain-raiser of Group E, with the game between Ivory Coast and Ecuador to follow a few hours later.

Julian Nagelsmann takes over for Die Mannschaft, and he heads into the quadrennial tournament as a man on a mission. Since he was appointed in September 2023, the former Bayern Munich boss has broadly delivered so far: reaching the Euro 2024 quarter-finals and the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League semi-finals, and qualifying for the World Cup.

Curacao will make their World Cup debut after passing the CONCACAF qualifiers, making them the smallest nation (by area and population) to qualify. But they enter this tournament with super low expectations.

Talking Points

Growing attacking depth gives Germany a unique headache

Germany will fancy their chances to make a deep run in this year’s World Cup, and their performance in the UEFA qualifiers provided a glimpse of their full potential. After losing 2-0 to Slovakia in the opening match, Die Mannschaft won their next five games to clinch their berth in the finals and finish with a superb goal difference of +13.

Nick Woltemade was their top scorer with four goals, and Serge Gnabry had three. Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sane had two goals, while Nadiem Amiri, Ridle Baku, Assan Ouedraogo, David Raum, and Florian Wirtz were also on the scoresheet.

Fast forward to today, and head coach Julian Nagelsmann has arranged one of the strongest frontlines in the tournament, at least on paper. The aforementioned stars are still here, and adding to the group are Kai Havertz, Deniz Undav, Felix Nmecha, Jamal Musiala, and Jamie Leweling. Lennart Karl was supposed to be here, but the Bayern Munich youngster suffered an untimely training injury.

Nagelsmann must choose between Havertz, Woltemade, and Undav for the No. 9, as all offer contrasting profiles. Havertz might be slightly ahead of the others, but Undav makes a strong case to start after a productive 2025-26 campaign with VfB Stuttgart.

Curacao will soak in the experience

Curacao will make their World Cup 2026 debut against Germany in Group E
Curacao manager Dick Advocaat reacts during their World Cup qualifying match against Aruba at the Guillermo Trinidad Sports Complex

Curacao qualified for the World Cup, as they had more goals than any other side in the CONCACAF region (28). Gervane Kastaneer was the Blue Wave’s top scorer with five goals. Juninho Bacuna, Kenji Gorre, and Rangelo Janga added three goals apiece.

Dick Advocaat’s men are expected to have a difficult time in Group E, but they won’t go down without a fight. Curacao have players who can give their opponents problems.

Skipper Leandro Bacuna is their most-capped player at 16 goals in 72 internationals. 37-year-old goalie Eloy Room will have his hands full, and he’s their second-most-capped player with 72 internationals. Rangelo Janga is the Blue Wave’s all-time leading scorer at 21 goals in 42 internationals. Tahith Chong will also use the World Cup 2026 to showcase his wares.

History

Sunday marks the first competitive meeting between Germany and Curacao, and both nations come into this in contrasting recent form.

Germany arrive in Texas in excellent form, having won each of their last nine matches. Here’s a fun fact: Julian Nagelsmann (38) is the youngest manager at the competition and is younger than goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (40), who is reportedly poised to start despite missing their recent exhibition matches, making him only the second German after Lothar Matthaus to play in five finals.

Dick Advocaat (78) is the oldest manager ever to take charge of a World Cup match. Curacao are the smallest nation to qualify for the 2026 edition (around 158,000 people). They are coming off a 4-0 thrashing of Aruba last weekend, ending their four-game winless run (D1, L3).

Betting Tip

The SBOTOP World Cup 2026 odds highlight the massive gap between Germany and Curacao, so much so that the 1X2 market didn’t bother to make a bet. Besides our recommended bet, you may also want to consider opting for -3.50 at 2.05 in the Asian Handicap in favour of Die Mannschaft.

This fixture should have multiple World Cup 2026 highlights, with Germany likely lighting up NRG Stadium, and a draw or a loss is considered a disaster for Julian Nagelsmann’s side. Feel free to add Over 4.00 at 1.71, Over 4.25 at 1.96, and Total Goals 4-6 at 1.92 to the parlay for additional value. Meanwhile, any Correct Score that would favour Curacao, starting at 1-1, would yield a staggering payday of at least 36.00 your bet.
