Brighton & Hove Albion vs Manchester United
When the English top flight draws to a close this weekend there is a tasty treat on the South Coast to look forward to, when Premier League: Brighton vs Manchester United kicks off at the Amex Stadium.
Fabian Hurzeler’s Seagulls are sitting in seventh place in the Premier League table, a place above their 2025 finishing slot. Brighton narrowly missed out on a European tour last season, but they are in the box seat this time around, and a win at home to Michael Carrick’s Manchester United will be enough to book a ticket. The Seagulls could have inched closer last week away to Leeds United, but they were denied a point by an injury time winner.
Now Brighton are set to take on the Red Devils in the hope of winning European football for the second time in the club’s history.
Manchester United confirmed their third place last week with a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest and the mood at Old Trafford has improved significantly since their former player returned as interim coach. Whether he can inspire his team to take on the hungry Seagulls with very little at stake remains to be seen, but he has done his job this season for sure.
Talking Points
Seagulls happy to be back home
Dominic Calvert-Lewin fired home a winner for Leeds against Brighton in the sixth minute of injury time after seizing on a mistake from Jan Paul van Hecke, and that made it back to back league losses for the Seagulls after they went down away to Newcastle United 3-1. But either side of the letdown on Tyneside Brighton won two home games, against Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers, both by a 3-0 scoreline.
Former Manchester United star Danny Welbeck scored the third in the win over Chelsea and he will be a thorn in the Red Devils’ side on Sunday. The 35 year old has rolled back the years to be Brighton’s top scorer with 13 goals; he is in the top ten league scorers and is the fourth highest English scorer with Calvert-Lewin, Morgan Gibbs-White and Ollie Watkins all on 14. His clever movement, turn of pace and clinical finishing have been a feature of Welbeck’s game and he is enjoying his football more than ever.
The Manchester United defence will need to keep an eye on 21-year-old attacking midfielder Jack Hinshelwood too; The England U21 star has scored in three of the last four games to make it 12 in 64 for the Seagulls. The Brighton vs Manchester United betting odds make the hosts the favourites to win this clash and I have no doubt, with the likes of Welbeck, Hinshelwood and Georginio Rutter in their ranks they will put their visitors’ rearguard under serious pressure.
Carrick is ready to continue

When Carrick was flown into Old Trafford in January, he was given the task of delivering Champions League football and he has done so by some margin. Okay the Red Devils had no European or domestic cup distractions, but the turnaround in the form of some of the United players has been impressive. After struggling to impress last term, Brazil and Real Madrid legend Casemiro has been very near his best this season while striker Benjamin Sesko has become the striker and target man the team has been missing.Skipper Bruno Fernandes has been a consistent performer for years of course, while those around him have floundered and he has been superb again this term, making 20 assists, eight more than his nearest rival, Manchester City star Rayan Cherki, and equalling a Premier League record set by Kevin de Bruyne and Thierry Henry. And the United captain has thrown his support behind Carrick, saying he is ‘here to serve’ and hopes the young manager can take the Red Devils back to the summit of the Premier League.
Sources at Old Trafford suggest that a broad agreement to keep Carrick as manager has been made and a deal could be announced next week. Only a couple of months ago he was seen as an interim only, with the club on the hunt for a permanent appointment, but Carrick deserves his chance and he is in a good position to prepare the team for the 2026/267 campaign.
History
The head to head Brighton vs Manchester United results have been well contested with the Red Devils winning by 11 to nine victories, while at the Amex Stadium the Seagulls edge the tally by five wins to four.
Brighton have won three of the last four meetings, dumping United out of the FA Cup in January while they saw off the Red Devils at the Amex last season by the odd goal in three.
In terms of recent form, Brighton have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six while United have won four drawn one and lost one.
Betting Tip
The Seagulls are odds on favourites at a SBOTOP price of 1.92 to win with the Red Devils at 3.40 and the draw at 3.95. They have been strong at home and have a huge incentive to get over the line on Sunday so I’m backing a home win, and I fancy another 2-1.
