SC Freiburg 0-3 Aston Villa
Aston Villa – the pride of the Midlands once more are sitting proudly amongst Europe’s finest.
Istanbul is Claret and Blue tonight and anyone associated with this football institution, one of the founders of the English Football League, will savour the moment they won the Europa League.
Ultimately, they cruised past the spirited Germans of Freiburg to the extent that, even with half an hour of the final still left to play, it was clear major silverware was returning to Villa Park for the first time in 30 years.
That occasion, in March 1996, saw Brian Little’s men run out comprehensive victory over Leeds in the League Cup Final at Wembley.
But this was different again; another level.
A first triumph on the continent since 1982, when they were champions of Europe, and nine of that team were at Besiktas Park, thrillingly watching on.
With Unai Emery at the helm, the undisputed king of this competition, was there ever any doubt?!
Highlights of the game
This is a man which has transformed this sleeping giant since taking charge in the autumn of 2022.
What he has achieved since then is nothing short of remarkable.
Indeed, this SBOTOP author believes his work during that time has not been bettered by any top flight manager.
With a fraction of the resources of his compatriots, Emery has guided Villa to the top six of English football in successive seasons and now a triumph in Europe.
Top work from a top coach who has reestablished Aston Villa as one of the ‘big boys’ of English football once again in more than just name.
In Turkey, they saved their best set of Europa League 2026 highlights for the biggest of occasions.
And who’d have thought they would have done it with Victor Lindelof – a former fourth-choice Manchester United centre back and an unused substitute in this final a year ago – marshalling the centre of midfield!
There was nothing in it until just before the break with Freiburg showing why they had boasted the best defence in the league phase of the competition, conceding just 10 goals in their 14 matches en route to the final.
Then Villa netted two quick-fire goals and took firm control.
Four minutes of the first half were remaining when Youri Tielemans, the Belgian who won the FA Cup for Leicester City five years ago, produced another stunner on the big stage.
It was textbook from the training ground as Villa took a short corner and Morgan Rogers found Tielemans who met the ball first time and produced a word-class finish into the bottom corner.
There was quickly more to come.
If the Villa faithful, which included the future king of England, Prince William, enjoyed that, they were in dreamland in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time with yet another textbook strike.
Captain John McGinn, such a driving force, played the ball to Emiliano Buendia and, on the turn, the Argentine ace cut inside and curled a shot into the top corner from outside the box.
A date with destiny, Villa were in dreamland; Freiburg – who had played their own part in a closely contested first half and deserve credit for reaching next season’s Europa Conference League – were deflated.

The pre-match SBOTOP Europa League betting odds were confirmed just before the hour and ensured there was no way back for the Bundesliga outfit.
This time Buendia turned provider as he beat his marker and fizzed a low cross into the six-yard box where Rogers got across his man to apply the finishing touch.
For a smiling Emery, this was a fifth success in this competition after three with Sevilla and one with Villarreal.
Remember, when the Spaniard took charge three and a half years ago, Villa were 16th in the Premier League – two places and one point above the relegation zone.
They went on to win 15 of their 25 league games to finish seventh and earn a spot in European competition for the first time since 2010-11.
In his first full season, Emery secured Champions League football for Villa for the first time since 1982–83. His side also won 15 consecutive home league games – the most in their 151-year history.
And my team to watch at the start of the tournament have just kept going and going.
Incredible Emery; Victorious Villa.
Key statistics
Villa won 13 of their 15 Europa League matches this term.
This was SC Freiburg’s first major European final in the club’s 122-year history.
When he entered the fray as a late substitute, Jadon Sancho became the first player to play in the final of three different major European competitions in three consecutive seasons with three different teams (2024 Champions League, 2025 Conference League).
What’s next?
This was Freiburg’s final game of the season.
Villa go to Manchester City on Sunday in their final Premier League match of the campaign with their place in next season’s Champions League already assured.
