DFB-Pokal: King Kane Wins the Double for Bayern

FC Bayern Munich 3-0 VfB Stuttgart

Bayern Munich are the 2026 DFB-Pokal champions thanks to a second-half hat-trick from the irrepressible Harry Kane, to beat a brave VfB Stuttgart at a packed Olympiastadion in Berlin.

The DFB-Pokal final clash between the 2025 winners and the back-to-back Bundesliga champions was dominated by Stuttgart in the first half but, after a quiet first 45, England skipper Kane came to life in spectacular style with a brilliantly taken treble as well as crashing the woodwork with a long-range howitzer. After winning the Bundesliga with plenty to spare and missing out on the Champions League this was a perfect end to the domestic season for the Bavarians; a league and cup double.

And Kane remains the best striker in the world on this evidence, which is great news for England fans as the World Cup approaches.

Highlights of the game

With the boost of finishing fourth in the league and booking their place for the 2026/27 Champions League Stuttgart came out all guns blazing in the final and Denis Undav, the Bundesliga’s second top scorer, tested Jonas Urbig in the Bayern nets after just two minutes. Maximilian Mittelstadt sent over a dangerous cross which Undav met from close range, but the Bayern stopper stood firm to keep his effort out. And with 17 minutes on the clock, Undav turned provider for Mittelstadt who picked up the ball outside the penalty area and fired in a well-aimed shot low towards the bottom right corner, but Urbig stretched himself to tip the effort wide.

From a Bayern point of view there were precious few DFB-Pokal 2026 highlights in the first half and 30 minutes had elapsed before Luis Diaz forced a save from Stuttgart keeper Alexander Nubel, as the sides went into the half-time break at 0-0.

Kane scored a hat-trick as Bayern smashed Cologne in their final Bundesliga game and he was unusually quiet in the first half, but, cometh the hour cometh the man and just ten minutes into the second period he gave the Bavarians a lead. Michael Olise was fouled by Chris Fuhrich and when the free kick was swung over Kane met it with a thumping header into the bottom left corner.

Bayern were buoyant and Diaz almost doubled the lead within minutes when Kane put him the through and he fired a fierce shot which Nubel saved low to his right.  And then, with 80 minutes on the clock Kane took a pass from Konrad Laimer and rattled the crossbar with a rocket from outside the penalty area. Stuttgart thought they were still in the game but Kane had other ideas and, when Diaz found him in space he slotted a clinical shot low into the bottom right corner, giving Nubel no chance.

The England man wasn’t finished and when Angelo Stiller handled in the penalty area, Kane stepped up and slammed home his injury time third to send the Bayern fans home happy and record yet another hat-trick.

Key statistics

Back in 2013 Bayern beat Stuttgart 3-2 in the German cup final and the Bavarians have now won 21 DFB titles while Stuttgart are stuck on four.

The DFB-Pokal 2026 betting odds backed a Bayern Munich win, but the first half statistics told a story of Stuttgart’s ambition, and the underdogs ended the half with a seven-to-three advantage in the shot count and three-to-two on target. But the second half was all about Kane who scored three as Bayern racked up a total of 11 shots and six on target to Stuttgart’s eight and three.

What’s next?

Bayern and Stuttgart can now take a breather, well the coaching staff and backroom boys can; because a whole host of the players will be packing their bags for the 2026 World Cup in America, which kicks off in under three weeks’ time. And before that there’s plenty more action for SBOTOP fans to get stuck into, with the Champions League final, between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, and the Europa Conference League final between Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano.

It could be an historic week for the Premier League with representation in all three European finals, Aston Villa have already won the Europa League, beating SC Freiburg.

The world class football just keeps on coming, but tonight the congratulations go to Bayern Munich om their domestic double, and the amazing Harry Kane.
